Upper Darby, PA, an inner-ring suburb of Philadelphia, has historically been one of the region’s most underserved areas, with high poverty rates and limited access to cultural resources.
Woodcock Design was brought in to design a 17-bed emergency shelter with inclusive spaces welcoming guests with pets, possessions, and partners. The building supports social service programs promoting self-sufficiency.
The shelter is currently in the first phase of construction and has provided Code Blue sanctuary and a home base for those in need.
When complete, the building will provide forty transient spaces for persons experiencing homelessness, coupled with support services to transition clients out of poverty.
