Woodcock Design, Inc. was engaged to conceptualize 2,000 foot-long tunnel on Lower 30th Street, an existing weather protected tunnel with city streets above.

The design incorporated modifications to the Cira Green parking garage for a waiting area, vertical circulation from lower 30th street to grade, and from grade to Cira Green, directional graphics, and lighting design.

Innovations on this project included the use of lighting and graphics to create a new identity for Lower 30th Street, use of the existing bridge structure for lighting, and the use of magnetic fasteners for the lighting fixtures that allow for the assembly to be temporarily removed during a future repair of the PennDot bridge above.

Branding and wayfinding graphics included an image of the United States that gives the viewer an idea of the extent of the bus system and the places one can go, a “you are here diagram” that greets travelers as they exit from their bus, providing a greeting, orientation, and wayfinding. Paving treatments and signage are designed to provide visual delight while enhancing public safety and pedestrian orientation.
